I had been frustrated with coffee makers that limed up after about a year from living on well water and thought this might do the trick. I run a coffee cleaner liquid through it about once a year (don't forget to take your filter when you clean it).
Simple math says I've put about 2400 pots of coffee through this coffeemaker and it's still working just fine. It brews about 8-9 pots of coffee a week.
I just thought I'd take a minute to rate this coffee maker. The key is using the filters This coffee maker is now 6 years old and still brewing a good cup of coffee.
I came back to Amazon to order some new filters and thought I'd see if the maker was still available. I bought this in 2003, six years ago.
Boy was I right.
i don't want other people starting their day off the way i have since i bought this machine. i tried to" jerry-rig" the basket by taking a piece if metal and sticking it into the crease were the hinge is but even if the basket moves an eighth of an inch the flow from the basket misses the hole in the top of the carafe and DRIBBLES DOWN THE SIDE OF THE CARAFE ONTO THE HOTPLATE making you scrub the burnt coffee off of the bottom of the carafe when it's done.i have only taken the time out of my busy schedule to write a review once before and that was to praise a product. if you don't stand there and babysit the thing you're in for a big mess.
that machine lasted about 12 years so when it died recently i felt that i made a wise decision by buying a braun product before so i, of course, wanted to buy a braun again. the problem is that the SPRING LOADED LATCH THAT KEEPS THE BASKET CLOSED HAS A 1 MILLIMETER DEGREE OF TOLERANCE. i'm a big fan of customer loyalty and when i was a starving artist in my 20's i decided to spend the extra money for a braun coffee maker.
if the machine is even touched the basket swings open, especially in the middle of brewing. IN A REALLY BAD MOOD. i regret to say it was a bad decision.the main problem is that the BASKET DOES NOT STAY CLOSED.
after the first time you go into the kitchen in the morning and find coffee all over your counter and floor you try and diagnose the problem.
The filters are expensive but worth the cost as friends coffeemakers just don't make as good tasting coffee. Moved the second one to the motorhome. This is a very good coffeemaker. I have been using Braun coffeemakers for a few years now and now own 2.
Filter cost is somewhat expensive. Not as well made as my previous Braun which I liked very much. Looks nice. Came with a defective filter basket (not from Amazon), which took over 2 months to be replaced. Leaks coffee over the side sometimes.
This one is only 10 cups, which okay, I knew up front. It's tedious doesn't-work-right stuff like this that frays my last nerve. Apparently two years was long enough for me to forget why I hated my last Braun. The carafe is cheap. But I never had this problem with any other coffee maker.Other issues- The damn basket doesn't close without cajoling: The filter (gold reusable, comes with,) doesn't seat well and catches on the top of the maker. I returned to the Braun brand, having spent a couple of years with a Krups knock-off I got free with an order of Gevalia Coffee.
Shortly after one of the coffee-everywhere episodes, I went to a J.C.Penny Outlet and bought a Cooks model krups-kinda maker. Making coffee shouldn't be this much work.On the plus side the programmable feature is wonderbar- easy to use, easy to decipher and not easily screwed up (I was forever accidentally resetting the time, which in turn screwed up my brew time, on the Gevalia model). I hate this. And not just to me, but when others make it as well. My own fault. really. I replaced the carafe from my last Braun 5 times in a year. A few times this has happened.
When the Gevalia maker developed an electrical short, that was it. A few times I have turned the maker on and left the room to go do something else while the coffee brews, only to return and find the basket has swung open mid-brew, and there's 10 cups of brown water everywhere but in the pot. It hasn't made it out of the box yet, but sits poised acrossed the kitchen, a threat to the Braun: "Clean up your act or I'll replace you." But it was hard to find a programmable 12 cup. Maybe.
